One of the world’s foremost virtuoso pianists, Marc-André Hamelin presents a highly unusual programme that places renowned classics alongside intriguing obscurities, some of which he unearthed himself. They all share one interesting feature: they were written by extraordinary pianists. Two great Chopin masterpieces, the Polonaise-Fantaisie and the Scherzo No. 4, take us to the roots of modern virtuoso pianism, while Scriabin’s mazurkas look back nostalgically to Chopin’s graceful style from a distance of several decades. Samuel Feinberg, a great performer of Scriabin’s works, wrote his own sonatas under the inspiration of Scriabin’s mature style: his Third, and especially its challenging finale, is a compositional and pianistic tour de force. Nikolai Medtner was once as successful a pianist-composer as Rachmaninov, but he faced hardship and obscurity after the Russian Revolution. His haunting Sonata Reminiscenza seems to be holding on to earlier, better days. At the lighter end of the programme are some songs by the French chansonnier Charles Trenet, in arrangements by the great virtuoso Alexis Weissenberg. They were initially published anonymously before Hamelin re-discovered these charming little pieces and brought them back to the concert stage.
