Zaubersee 2018 opens with a celebration of Mischa Maisky, who has been a great friend of the festival. Mischa will appear with his children, Lily and Sasha, in a programme that mixes soulful lyrical pieces by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov and Scriabin with two contrasting works by Shostakovich. Shostakovich’s Cello Sonata of 1934 is his exploration of a melodic neoclassical style after the extremes of his avant-garde period. His celebrated Trio No. 2 was written ten years later, in commemoration of his closest friend, Ivan Sollertinsky. The use of Jewish-inflected themes, however, together with the sombre mood, has broadened the perceived message of the piece, which is now often taken to be an anti-war statement or even a kind of Holocaust memorial.
