It would be hard to imagine a programme filled with more famous melodies: each of today’s Russian symphonic classics was later plundered for material that could be re-used in film scores, musicals, and pop songs. This concert will replace them in their original settings. We shall also have a chance to experience the two very different approaches taken by Russian composers in the late 19th century: the heightened emotionalism of Tchaikovsky’s and Rachmaninov’s powerful narratives, and on the other hand, the creation of colourful and richly exotic tapestries of songs and dances, tonight’s selection offering us Oriental and Spanish flavours. Deep melancholy and wild abandon – the two sides of the stereotypical ‘Russian soul’ – are for once set alongside each other in this exciting hit parade. Behzod Abduraimov will appear as the soloist in Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto, which he has recently performed in the world’s most prestigious venues to great acclaim.
