Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844 – 1908)
Piano Trio in C minor
Songs of Rimsky-Korsakov, Balakirev and Rachmaninov
In this unusual programme, you will hear one of Rimsky-Korsakov’s least-known works, his beautiful Piano Trio of 1897, in which he brought his own style onto the intensely lyrical terrain that Tchaikovsky had previously claimed as his own. But his confidence faltered, and operatic projects beckoned, so the Trio was left unfinished, waiting until 1939 before it was finally completed by his son-in-law and favourite pupil, Maximilian Steinberg.
The pure streams of Russian lyricism, however, are nowhere as abundant as in the genre of the «romance», or art song, to which every Russian composer paid his due. A feast of romances will be presented to you by the international opera star and Mariinsky soloist Ekaterina Semenchuk, who has also won high praise for her subtle but dramatic treatment of touching human stories in the smaller-scale world of the romance.
Before the concert the Hotel Schweizerhof offers an exclusive three-course meal.
