Alexander Grechaninov (1864 – 1956)
The Credo from the Liturgy, Op. 29

Imagine an elegant home in Paris or St Petersburg, a gracious music-loving host and a select audience assembled to greet a famous artiste… Or perhaps the salon of an opera star who saved her favourite songs for her most discerning group of friends… The music in this concert comes from this kind of setting, from the 1850s to the 1910s. You will hear a great range of music, from Borodin’s songs written for amateur music-making (he himself was an amateur cellist) to highly virtuosic and expressive cello works by Saint-Saёns and Tchaikovsky. Ekaterina Semenchuk will introduce you to some of Rachmaninoff’s more unusual songs (including his setting of a passage from Tchekhov’s Uncle Vanya) and also to some rarely heard songs by Arensky (one of them to a text by Tchaikovsky). Grechaninov’s moving Credo was written for use in church, but the composer, who encouraged musical devotions at home, would undoubtedly have approved of a performance in more intimate surroundings.
