String Quartet 2 & Piano

11.30 am | Introductory talk by Prof. Marina Frolova-Walker

Mieczysław Weinberg (1919 – 1996)
Improvisation & Romance (world premiere)

Vissarion Shebalin (1902 – 1963)
String Quartet No. 5 in F minor, Op. 33 («Slavonic»)

Dmitri Shostakovich (1906 – 1975)
Piano Quintet in G minor, Op. 57

One of Shostakovich’s outstanding masterpieces, his Piano Quintet of 1940, will share the stage today with fascinating works by his loyal disciples, Shebalin and Weinberg. The value of Shebalin’s music was recognised in Soviet times, and his «Slavonic» quartet, based on folk themes of different nations, won a Stalin Prize (as did Shostakovich’s Quintet two years earlier). Weinberg, who favoured Jewish musical materials, positioned himself as more of an outsider on the Soviet musical scene, and musicians are still discovering forgotten gems in his prodigious output even today. We are excited to present to you the world premiere of Weinberg’s Improvisation and Romance.
