A native of Saratov, Russia, tenor Alexey Sayapin made his professional debut in Russia as Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor at the Saratov Opera Theatre, followed by Alfredo in La Traviata at the Mikhailovsky Theatre in St. Petersburg.
Upon hearing Mr. Sayapin, Plácido Domingo declared him «the Russian Corelli» after the legendary Italian tenor. He is First Prize winner of the International Competition of Tenors in memory of Luciano Pavarotti (2008, St. Petersburg). Following his American debut as Pinkerton with the Wichita Grand Opera, he made his debut with the Los Angeles Opera at Maestro Domingo’s invitation (Tybalt in Roméo et Juliette). His many other awards include prizes at the Galina Vishnevskaya and Elena Obraztsova International Competitions.
